Research on Sickle Cell

Since its beginning in 1973, the nonprofit

Colorado Sickle Cell Association has worked to:

  • ·  Create awareness of the impact of sickle cell disease on individuals and their families

  • ·  Educate the public and health care providers about sickle cell disease

  • ·  Enhance the lives of affected individuals and their families

  • ·  Support and encourage research leading to improved treatment and a full cure

Treatment and Research:

The Colorado Sickle
Cell Treatment and Research Center is one of a number of regional centers around the nation.  The dedicated health professionals at the Sickle Cell Center (303-372-9070) and at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center care for about 150 children and 150 adults, and do research on how to improve outcomes for sickle cell patients.

Pediatric sickle cell patients are treated at The
Children’s Hospital in Denver, and adult patients are cared for at the University Hospital’s Fitzsimons campus in Aurora.

National Efforts:

The Sickle Cell Disease
Association of America (SCDAA) works at the national level to promote sickle cell awareness and increase funds for research and treatment.  SCDAA also hosts national conferences which Colorado members attend each year.  In recent years these efforts have paid off with new federal legislation increasing funding for sickle cell research and treatment.

A milestone in raising public consciousness occurred in September 2004, when the US Post Office issued a “stamp of approval” promoting sickle cell awareness and early testing.
